Boca Raton City Council Approves Red Light Cameras and Paid Parking

The Boca Raton City Council has approved red light cameras at 10 intersections as well as paid parking at the beaches. The parking in the Mizner Park garage and at the parks will remain free.  This decision comes as the City tries to balance the budget and there are good arguments on both sides.

I think we could have done without the red light cameras as studies have shown after a year or so the revenue produced by these falls dramatically. Its nice to make motorist aware of when they need to stop but these cameras also cause many rear end collisions as more people will now be stopping short.

Downtown Boca Raton Plan Moving Forward

After being on the back burner for awhile the City of Boca Raton is looking to get the downtown project moving again.  With the challenging economy everyones attention was on other things but with the real estate market showing signs of life many things are starting to get a new look. A new idea on the table is to bring the new public library to Mizner Park. It will be interesting to see how things progress.

New Florida Seat Belt Law

Our Governor has signed the new seat belt law into effect for all of Florida including Boca Raton which says the police department can pull a driver over just for not wearing a seat belt.  In the past they could only give out tickets for this offense if they pulled you over for something else. The state will get funds from the federal government for signing this into law and it is sure to be a good revenue stream for the state as well.

The ticket can cost you from around $30 up to $120. We should all be in the habit of buckling up especially with the amount of accidents we see everyday on our roads. The new law takes effect July 1, 2009.

Boca Raton has a new Bar/Nightclub Law

In the spirit of keeping Boca Raton a safe and pleasant town for all, the City Council has approved a new law that states that customers under the age of 21 are not permitted on the property of a bar or nightclub from 10pm - 8am.  The establishments must also have cameras inside and out as well as security on staff after 10pm.

Anything that makes the town a better place and as a result real estate worth more is a good thing.
